Does anyone have the Linguaphone Gael-Linn course or know anything about it? I bought it a few years back (costing me a pretty penny) but never made it past the intro. I'm about to go back to it again and wondering what others thought of it. |

Yes, I have it. The author is a friend of mine but (and I've said this before) the course was written within limits and, in my opinion, is not the best Irish course available. Larry Ackerman

Could you expand on what you mean by "written within limits" and also what you think it's problems are compared to other courses? I've been considering getting Learning Irish as it seems to be popular here. Thanks |

First of all let me stress that I'm stating my own opinion here... I believe that it was written to conform to the Linguaphone standard which, in my opinion, is not set very high. I know for a fact that Diarmuid was a very good teacher but then, I would say that, wouldn't I? I also believe that it's over-priced. Other courses, such as the one you mentioned, are much more accessible to those of us with limited budgets. Having said that, I do prefer Diarmuid's grammar sections to those of Mícheál Ó Siadhail's Learning Irish. The former explains things in more detail but, if you're not too bothered about those things, then Mícheál's course, which deals heavily with the Cois Fhairrge dialect, is quite good. As you already have the Linguaphone course, I suggest that you give it a go and see what you think before spending any more money on courses. Whether one course is better than another is purely a matter of personal taste, which is why I'm reluctant to make any firm recommendation. Larry Ackerman
