Dia dhuit a chairde...
(Please excuse the many things I'm sure I got wrong with that single sentence- I'm about ten years out of practice).

I wonder if any of you could point me in the right direction with a couple of things.

I've been looking for the Irish version of my little brother's name, Alexander.
I believe it to be "Alsander" but have been able to find very little info on this. Anyone have anything on this?

Also, I'd like to be able to converse with him and help him with his Irish homework and the like when he goes to school in a couple of years, but my Irish is practically non-existent.Where would be a good place to go to try and refresh what I must have spent a couple of thousand hours during my school years learning but can't seem to remember any of?

Is fíor duit, Conor, ach le trí 'a': Alsandar. Sin é an litriú a fheicim anseo in An Sloinnteoir Gaeilge. Funny thing that Alsandar is not much used, while the Scottish Gaelic version, Alasdair, is quite popular. The versions Alastar and Alastrann have also been used in Ireland.

I don't normally like making recommendations for books but you might find Progress in Irish by Máiréad Ní Ghráda (ISBN 0-86167-159-7) useful as a refresher for those thousands of hours of study.

And, of course, you'll be very welcome to visit us here again should there be anything either you or your son need to know ;-)

Le meas,

Larry Ackerman
