Geographical location did not significantly alter the results with between 61% and 64% in favour of scrapping compulsory Irish in all four provinces.

Surprisingly though, the majority of those closest to school-going age said they agreed with keeping the Irish language compulsory up to the Leaving Cert.

According to the poll, 52% of those in the 18 to 24 age category wanted to keep the Irish language compulsory while those in older categories were more in favour of abandoning the subject after the Junior Cert.

That's really interesting … why would those actually attending school be more willing to keep it I wonder?

"Those in the 18 to 24 age category" have mostly already sat the leaving cert. Now they just want to be sure that others share their pain! ;-) Sin míniú amháin, ar aon nós.

I suspect it's because while the teaching system(s) have much work that needs to be done, it's not nearly as bad as it once was. Those who are older and out of school have the worst memories of it.

A possible ray of hope (?)
