Plese can somebody tell me what the hyphens mean over the e,m, and o in the celtic script style of writing? The o's and e's have a normal "french" style hyphen, but the m's have a small diamond type dot above them. Does anybody know what these mean in comparison with the same letters without them please?? Ta. |

M or other consonant with a dot over it means lenition, a change in the sound usually represented in modern Irish by an "h" after the letter. áóúéí are long vowels. (Message edited by aonghus on November 28, 2005) |

It lengthens the sound. |

Coincidentally, many other consonants can also take the dot, not just m. They would be b,c,d,f,g,m,p,s,t |
