A chairde, This is probably a very silly question and I think I should know the answer, but the simple truth is that I don't. I want to say "This is nice" without specifying exactly what I'm refering to. I'll give you a simple little scenario as an example: I'm sitting in a restaraunt and enjoying the food. I can say "Tá an béile seo go deas", clearly identifying what I'm describing as nice, but if I point to the food making it obvious, can I say "Tá sé seo go deas"??? Christine. |

Hi Crístíona, Tá sé seo go deas - This is nice Bheadh sé sin go deas - That would be nice Or you can use the copula as in Is maith sin - That's good (smashing) Is deas sin - That's nice Often the pronoun is in there also Is deas é seo - This is nice Ba dheas é sin - That was nice |

A Chrístíona, a chara, Ní díchéillí an cheist ar chor ar bith í. A mhalairt ar fad i mo thuairim. ________________ I'd like to suggest something, if I may. There's a simple little trick you might like to try if you're unsure about something. If you use a search engine (Google.ie is a good one which springs to mind) and type in, for example, "tá sé seo" (including the quotation marks) you'll see by the number of hits that you get whether or not a particular phrase is correct. It's just a little something that you might like to consider. Of course, you're always welcome to ask questions on this forum ;-) _______________ Agus fáilte go dtí an bhallraíocht... Larry Ackerman

Google is risky for correctness.... There is a lot of bad Irish on the internet, some of it, monuar, due to me. ;-) |

A Aonghuis, a chara, Ar ndóigh, tá an ceart agat. Maybe it wasn't such a good suggestion after all. Although I don't necessarily agree that some of that bad grammar is down to you Larry Ackerman

It's true that google isn't the most reliable even though I use that trick too a Larry ;) Saying that, the expanding volume of Irish on the web is encouraging in itself.. |

It wasn't a bad suggestion - just a suggestion that needs a caveat. I'd use google, but look at the first few sites that it hit to see whether they appear reliable -e.g. academic sites, gaeltacht sites etc. |

Ceart go leor, a chairde. Go raibh míle maith agaibh as sin. Tiocfaidh mé ar ais le ceisteanna eile, gan amhras. Christine. |
