I am attempting to locate a product called the Linguaphone for Irish Gaelic. They sell it on their website for 425$ which is a bit pricey for me. If anybody has a used one, preferably on CD, or knows where I can find a used one, I'd like to hear from you. Thank you. David.

They have it listed on Amazon.com:

Linguaphone Irish Language Course (6 Audio Cassettes and Books) (Audio Cassette)
Books: See all 2 items (Rate this item)
Buy new: $225.00 Special Order

Linguaphone English Language Course For Irish Speakers (6 Audio Cassttes and Books) (Audio Cassette)
Books: See all 2 items (Rate this item)
Buy new: $225.00 Special Order

...but $225 is still really steep for six tapes and a book!!

Now that I think about it, is there a particular reason you want Linguaphone, or would you be willing to try another book/CD? There are plenty of good ones.

I'd suggest Learning Irish or Buntús Cainte or... well, there is a whole list of materials you could use. Some are listed here at Daltaí, and there is a nice list at

Linguaphone is not bad, but definitely not worth its price. Learning Irish is
a. much cheaper
b. based on natural speech
c. more extensive
d. more user-friendly
e. presents grammar much better

If you can get Linguaphone from a library, that's fine (but remember no-one speaks like the persons on the tapes), but Learning Irish is a much better product. So is almost any other course as well, if the relation between quality and price is taken into consideration.

I agree with Jonas up to a point. The author of the linguaphone course is a personal friend of mine but please bear in mind that it was written within the constraints of the Linguaphone Institute.

Diarmuid Ó Donnchadha, at that time Director of Foras na Gaeilge, was capable of much better...

I think learning it from the internet is much better. You can listen to Radió na Gaeltachta to get the pronunciation and speech, alot of sites give examples of the pronunciation anyway, after that I'd buy a book in Irish and translate it, learning the new words as you go along. That's how I learn languages and I find it very cheap and quite effective. A quick Google search will give you plenty of grammar sites, the guys on this site have a multitude also.

Be careful with websites on Irish: most of them have many mistakes, and the pronounciation given, most of the time, isn't precise, or it is even completely wrong.

By way of a postscript . . .

I agree with Jonas that the Linguaphone course is greatly overpriced when bought new. That said, it's a relatively nice, relatively complete course of Irish if you don't mind that it doesn't focus on one dialect.

The one caveat I'd add, though -- NEVER (unless you're incredibly wealthy) buy it at retail price. In fact, the price I paid for my copy of this course (US$80) was about at the upper limit of what this is worth. And you *can* get a set for that kind of price or cheaper if you're patient. Watch eBay (a set usually shows up every few months) or check ABEbooks.com regularly.

I wish they'd come out with a CD version, though. I don't play the tapes often for fear of wearing them out.

put them on cd yourself.

play the tapes in a tape player, but connect it to your computer. you can get a cable to connect the headphone/output of your player to the mic/input of your computer. Then all you need is a free audio recorder you can download off the internet. just set it to record from 'input/mic' and it will record the tape! save as an mp3 (or aiff if you prefer).

that's how i got my pimsleur tapes onto a cd when my bookstore only had the cassettes...

A freeware programme to record from line-in is http://stepvoice.com/download/svrecorder.zip. I am using this to transfer the Learning Irish tapes to WMA audio files.
