Does anyone know what the conventional wisdom is on the etymology or origin of the term "rundale?"

I always thought it involved some combination of roinn and dáil...but that was pure speculation.

I am reading Kevin Kenny's History of Irish America and in his chapter on the Scots-Irish he explains the term in some detail, but gives no linguistic derivations in Irish or English. Kenny writes that in Scotland it was called runrig?
