Can anyone recommend an Irish poetry collection for me? I'm a beginner, but I remember that when I learned English I used to read a lot of poetry. That broadened my vocabulary as well as made my English more fluent. I'm thinking of using the same method now that I'm teaching myself Irish! ;) |

Jag sökade efter böcker på biblioteket på mina universitet, och finnade många på Irish. Kanske du kan finna man det? (D'oh! Sorry... wrong language!!) I have found a few Irish poetry books at my university library. That might be a place to look if you're close to such a place. Lycka till!! Aaron |

I know it sounds unsophisticated, but this might serve you well: "Favourite Poems We Learned in School As Gaeilge", at €7.61 from litriocht.com. |

Hehe. That sounded a bit primary-school-like. Is it? :-) Aaron, send me an e-mail. Are you Scandinavian? (Message edited by norwegiandame on August 22, 2005) |

This one is really good...in my unbiased opinion... http://www.scoilgaeilge.org/lasmuigh/danta/ It's bilingual (on facing pages). There is also a CD available of all the poems (except the songs, which are on another CD). And you can get to some free ones with translations on that site. Séamas, the link worked! Velly nice poetly! I'll lead mole of it soon! A Norwegiandame, an bhfuil tú ag iompú i do Sheapánach? Are you turning Japanese? D'aon ghnó a rinne tú é, is dócha, ach ní thuigim na L in ionad R atá agat.

Ooh! I thought 'is docha' meant 'it's likely'. But I checked in my dictionary and it says "is docha é" and THAT means "it's likely". Is that correct? PS: Bad misspelling there too, Séamas. I looked for 'gleann' and that means valley. :) Dála an scéil, tá t'anam go hiontach! (Is that correct?) |

The point of Séamas' joke was that he replaced "r" with "l" as Asians are said to do. quote:Dála an scéil, tá t'anam go hiontach! It is, if you meant he has a wonderful soul! Otherwise, name is "ainm". An "d'ainm" is more usual. "t'anam/t'ainm" would be dialect. |

Rinne mé mar a rinne N. romham. Ní raibh mé ach ag iarraidh leanúint leis an gcluiche a thosaigh sise. Is cladhaire mé, mar atá a fhios agaibh. I did as N. did before me. I was just trying to play the game she started. I'm a rascal, as yous know. Is dócha - 'It is likely,' 'probably,' or 'I guess.' I used it for 'I guess.' |

Ní doigh liom gur cladhaire thú, a Shéamais. Rogaire, nó scabhtaeir, nó buachaill báire, ach cladhaire?
cladhaire [ainmfhocal firinscneach den cheathrú díochlaonadh] bithiúnach; meatachán. |

Rógaire, mar sin, mar gheall ar an ndébhríocht. A Mhamaí, nach tú an cladhaire...is amhrán sin, agus ní shílim gur mheatachán í. |

Níl rud ar bith deas faoi bithiúnaqch ach oiread. Níl brí chomh holc leis na cinn eile a luaigh mé. |

Seamus, a bit OT, but is that your picture, or a CD cover? Or, if it is you as a pic on a cover, are you a musician? |

It is my picture on my CD cover: http://www.scoilgaeilge.org/ceol/cleasamhran/cleas.htm A Nor., tá cláir go leor eile chun éisteacht leo ag www.wfuv.org, sa chartlann faoin gclár Míle Fáilte (Dé Sathairn), agus cláir eile nach é freisin. Molaim an ceann ó 16 Iúil i mbliana go háirithe! There are lots of other programs to listen to at...in the digest under Míle Fáilte (Saturday), and other shows too. I especially recommend the one from July 16th of this year! |

Fionnuar! Cool! (sár-bhéarlachas, tá a fhios agam!) (big time anglicisation, I know!) Actually, that whole show is about me and my friend. I've been on the show a bunch of times, mostly on the fund raising shows, which are not archived. |

Not really. I know of only one that was bought in Ireland so far. I am an outsider, so I don't get all the free publicity and help that someone in the (grant) system gets. I depend mostly on word of mouth. (Ní binn béal ina thost sa chás seo! The quiet mouth is not sweet in this case!) Someone in Japan bought one of my poetry CDs. You never know. Compared to the price of CDs over in Ireland, ours are a real bargain! I can't believe how expensive things are over there. Bheinn buíoch díot (díbh) as cabhair ar bith, dar ndóigh! I would be grateful to you for any help, of course! |

What does a CD cost in Ireland? You should go to Norway. Here you have to pay about 20-24 Euro for a CD(we don't use Euro, but to make you understand)! Maybe I will buy one of your albums! Is there any other way I can help? :-) |

Idir sé déag agus fiche eoro, de ghnáth. Sin idir fiche agus fiche cúig dollar, gan trácht ar an bpostas, atá an-daor. Between 16 and 20 E, usually. That's between 20 and 25 dollars, not to mention the postage, which is very costly. Mar shampla: http://www.cic.ie/cgi-bin/index.asp Well, I've already asked one person to tell everyone in Finland, so you can now tell everyone in Norway! Éist leis na samplaí, agus más maith leat iad, ceannaigh an DD. Bhéinn buíoch díot. Listen to the samples, and if you like them, buy the CD. I would be grateful to you.
