Apacailipsis 6:8 ... "D'fhéach mé, agus b’shiúd an t-each báiteach bán agus “An Bás” a ba ainm don mharcach a bhí air..." ..."I looked, and there before me was [a] pale horse and Death was the name of its rider..." Larry Ackerman

Maybe they're just dialectal idiosyncrasies... but I don't think: b' shiúd a ba are grammatically correct? D'fhéach mé, agus ba shiúd an t-each báiteach bán, agus "An Bás" ab ainm don mharacach a bhí air. I don't know what "siúd" means here. Just thought of something now: You know how in English, we separate adjectives with commas, eg. the big, blue, beautiful house Well do you do that in Irish? My guess would be no as I regularlly would write the likes of: an teach mór gorm álainn |

A chara, On your first point I can only say that I lifted the quote directly from my copy of An Bíobla Naofa. I used it to illustrate a sentence where the two words "pale" and "rider" appear within a single sentence. On your second point I agree with you. I do not seperate adjectives, in Irish, with a comma. Nor do I remember anybody else using a comma in those circumstances. Larry Ackerman

I have a strong feeling we discussed Pale Rider before. Maybe, Caoimhín, we should start an FAQ on such topics? |

An FAQ is certainly needed Aonghus. A Daltaí volunteer has been working on an board FAQ for a while. Unfortunately given the time limitations that we all have, I wouldn't expect it anytime soon. Caoimhín Tír gan teanga, tír gan anam.

Is fearr déanach ná go brách! Yes. Indeed. Especially as the answer to many FAQ will be "it depends!" Perhaps it could be put up incrementally? |
