86'd In The Holy Land

Eiighty six
Éiteachas aíocht
Éiteachas aíochta
Denial of hospitality; denial of lodging at an inn or guest house. In New York City and San Francisco breac-Ghaeltacht dialect: to be permanently "barred" from a saloon. Also called "the dread 86."

As the old "collector," Tommy "Nutsy" (neart saobh)Fagan explained to me many years ago, when I was a kid in Rockaway Beach...

"Da' Bible sez, Jesus, Mary, and Joseph got da' “eighty-six” (éiteachas aíochta, denial of lodging and hospitality) from ev’ry jynt (díonta) in Bet’lahem (Bethlehem.) Ta'day in New Yawk, widdout da moolah (moll óir, a pile of gold), dey'd get da same numbah: éiteachas aíochta. Whadda ya' t'ink a dat, kid (a chuid)?"

Eighty six
Éiteachas aíochta
Denial of lodging and hospitality.
