my brother just got back from Inis Mór. He is a non-Irish speaker that didn't have a whole lot of interest in the language. He said that 'everybody was speaking english' and the only times they spoke Irish was when they didn't want the tourists to follow their conversation or for kitch value...speaking an Irish heavily peppered with english words.

However, he attributed that to the Islands being so heavily touristed. He said in other areas off the beaten path (and even in english speaking areas of the country) it was a much different story and his assessment was, "It's [the language is] not going away."

He then got ahold of a Buntús vol.1 and is learning a bit here and there from me.
