Eugene, This is from "Sloinnte Uile Eireann (All Ireland Surnames)" by Seán de Bhulbh. Ó Donnghaile very numerous: Ulster and northern half generally. Ir. Ó Donnghaile, perhaps meaning "brown valor" from the roots Donn meaning brown and gal meaning deed. A sept of Cineal Eoghain (Tyrone). There were other groups of the name in Sligo and Cork. This is from "Irish Names for Children" by Patrick Woulfe. Eoghan an ancient and rather common Irish name, explained as meaning "well born". Eugene is the anglicisation of Eoghan (pronounced Owen). Names to carry proudly. |

I believe it's a circuitous route that takes us from Eugene to Eoghan and thence to well born. I think the "well born" (good genes) is directly out of Greek and Latin roots. My great grandfather's name was Owen, and I'd be interested in knowing the meaning of the name as Gaeilge. |

Eoghan has been variously Englished as Owen and Eugene. The latter actually goes all the way back to the Middle Ages, when Old Irish Eógan was Latinized as Eugenius. But Eó-gan means "yew-born", so it's not equivalent to Eu-gene = well-born, although the second elements of both are cognate. See Ó Corráin & Maguire, _Irish Names_. |
