It seems the Irish don't like infinitives. So what's
the most appropriate way to convey "I hope to go to .. or
I plan to .. ". Would you say 'Ta suil a bheith go
Sligeach' or 'Ta suil agam ag dul go .. ?
Go mo leithsceal, but I can't deal with fadas fos. |

I would say "tá súil agam go rachaidh mé go Sligeach", or "tá mé ag súil le dul go Sligeach". |

"tá mé ag súil le dul go Sligeach". - To me, that implies you are definitely going to Sligo, and you are looking forward to it.
Whereas "Tá súil agam dul go Sligeach" means you're not certain you will go. |

Sort of like the difference between:
I'm looking forward to departing to Sligo
I'm looking forward to a departure to Sligo
The former is more definite, much more suggestive that it's definitely going to take place. The latter is more... grab it when the opportunity comes. |

To me, what i've given is right (i've heard it in the Gaeltacht and you can find it in O Dónaill’s dictionary, under "súil"), i've never heard the structure you've given: bheith ag súil + verbal noun, and it sounds odd to me, but of course i may be wrong. At least i'm sure that what i've given is right. Have you some proof that your structure is right? Thanx |
