Tá ceist agam, más é do thoil é: In "Learning Irish," chp 12, "There is only one hospital here." is translated as: "Níl anseo ach an t-aon ospidéal amháin." I wrote: "Tá aon ospidéal amháin anseo." Is my answer also correct? Go raibh maith agaibh! |

Not quite. Yours means "there is one sole hospital here" It is not as definite as the other. |

If you want to say that 'only' something is the case, then the 'Learning Irish' translation is the only possible one; it works by excluding all other possibilities. Other examples would be: Níl agam ach an hata sin - I have only that hat; Ní bhfuair mé ach an ceann seo - I only got this one; Níl sa pháirc seo ach capall - there is only a horse in this field (or in this 'paddock' as we say in Australia). |

One way of getting the hang of that construction is to think of "ach" as meaning "except": Níl cóta agam ... ach an ceann a bhfuair me uaitse. I've no coat ... except the one I got from you. |

Thanks everyone for your help! It may take me some time to understand the distinction between the 2 constructions. I'll have to ruminate on your commnets for a while. |

quote:>Níl cóta agam ... ach an ceann a bhfuair me uaitse. Ach an ceann a fuair mé uaitse (direct relative) ;-) Mínigh é seo dom le do thoil. Seo ar cheap mé: An duine a fuair an leabhar. An leabhar a bhfuair an duine. Nach bhfuil an méid thuas i gceart?! Agus cén fath go gcloisfí: Cad a cheapann tú? in ionad: Cad a gceapann tú? |
