A discussion on changing one's mind (or rather how to say so in Irish) with Lughaidh has reminded me of the wealth of different words in Irish which cover the concept mind.

There is "inchinn" - literally "in head" i.e brain, the organ, the physical thing.

There is "aigne" which I would consider to be the whole thing - intellect and will - as philosphers define the mind.

There is "meon" which I would consider the sum of thoughts/feelings - sometimes with regard to a specific topic.

There is "intinn" - I would translate this as "intent", but its meaning is broader.

All of this is a roundabout way of saying that, to my mind, having a few languages to hand is great for broadening the mind. And searching for the best word to illustrate is concept is good mind-work. So mind your languages!

Shíl mé riamh go raibh difríocht idir eagna agus aigne:

eagna [ainmfhocal baininscneach den cheathrú díochlaonadh]
tuiscint, gaois; meabhair

aigne [ainmfhocal baininscneach den cheathrú díochlaonadh]
acmhainn smaointe an duine, intinn; beocht, meanma.

Nach gaois chun gnímh cheart a dhéanamh intinn bhur mana?

An ceart agat a Aonghuis. Iomrall súile as an bpost a chuaigh roimhe a bhain tuisle asam. Gabh mo leithscéal.

'Eagna chun gnímh' ba cheart a bheith sa scéal thuas.

Iomrall súile (homoioteleuton) nó iomrall aigne.
