A radically Right-Wing organisation has rented billboard space throughout Queens and Brooklyn attacking immigrant communities. One billboard in Sunnyside was widely reported in NYC newspapers and on local television. Queens Borough President Claire Shulman courageously held a news conference in front of the offending billboard, condemning its hateful message against the residents of a borough in which 150 different languages are spoken each day. It should be noted that Sunnyside has hosted a large Irish community for several decades. Recently, there has been an influx of immigrants from Gaeltacht areas and it is not impossible to hear Irish-language conversations on the street, in the shops and in public houses along Queens Boulevard and Skillman Avenue. Last Sunday night, only a few blocks away from this hideous billboard, I spoke with two young people from Gaoth Dobhair as Gaeilge. ProjectUSA's ( www.projectusa.org) feigned concern for urban overcrowding is a thinly veiled attack on the rights of NYC Irish-speakers!
