A radically Right-Wing organisation has rented billboard space throughout Queens and Brooklyn attacking immigrant communities. One billboard in Sunnyside was widely reported in NYC newspapers and on local television. Queens Borough President Claire Shulman courageously held a news conference in front of the offending billboard, condemning its hateful message against the residents of a borough in which 150 different languages are spoken each day. It should be noted that Sunnyside has hosted a large Irish community for several decades. Recently, there has been an influx of immigrants from Gaeltacht areas and it is not impossible to hear Irish-language conversations on the street, in the shops and in public houses along Queens Boulevard and Skillman Avenue. Last Sunday night, only a few blocks away from this hideous billboard, I spoke with two young people from Gaoth Dobhair as Gaeilge. ProjectUSA's ( www.projectusa.org) feigned concern for urban overcrowding is a thinly veiled attack on the rights of NYC Irish-speakers!

We suggest that you post your OWN message to "ProjectUSA" at the following address:

Tá dream ann atá ag caitheamh airgid anseo insna Stáit Aontaithe ar na fógraí móra seo le cur ina luí ar dhaoine gur cúis gach oilc iad na hinimircigh. Iad seo ina gceap milleáin ag daoine atá míshásta leis an tsaol. They're spending a lot of money to make immigrants into scapegoats for the white American male -- as everyone knows we are the downtrodden of the world ;-)) (Tuigeann corrbhean gheal ár bpian freisin.)

Cárb as don airgead? Where does the money for the ads come from? Go to the website and you can vote for new slogans (manaí nua). My favorite is 'Immigrants are responsible for 90% of urban congestion'. Wonder how they figured that out. Caithfidh tú deich vóta a chaitheamh, ar an laghad, ar $1 an vóta. $1 a vote, ten vote minimum!

Labhair a lán daoine suas. Bhain an Chathair (an bardas) na comharthaí anuas. Ar phointí teicniúla, ach is mar sin a oibríonn cúrsaí polaitíochta an chuid is mó den am.

A lot of people spoke up (did you send an e-mail as the folks at Anbhuain suggested?). The City closed down the boards. On technicalities, to be sure, but that's how things often work. They were put up without a permit in the first place.

People should be aware of two things: 1. The 'facts'in these billboards are bogus (they claim, mar shampla, that there are about three times as many immigrants per year as there really are),and 2. This is classic scapegoating, blaming people's frustrations and other problems on whole groups of others. If you don't want to be manipulated, don't listen to them.

Breathníonn Craig Nelson, an fear óg taitneamhach tarraingteach atá i gceanas air seo, le haoibhneas ar an 'smacht' atá ar rialtas na Síne ar daonra na tíre sin. Ar ndóigh, bíonn ginmhilleadh riachtanach mar bhunchloch sa chóras sin. The smooth-talking, good-looking guy who heads this group admires the Chinese govt. for their population control. Which makes liberal use of forced abortion.

They are promising more billboards.
