Derivation of the surname; "brí na sloinne" the "an" is not required. I wouldn't use fréamh - (root) for origin. Foinse is a better word. Foinse sloinnte na hÉireann Foinse na sloinnte Éireannacha Ainm agus Sloinne i Stair na hÉireann - if you mean the history of the country. Ainm agus Sloinne i Stair na nGael - if you mean the people. Sept is usually the translation of "fine". But if you are using Uí, the sept is implied. Muintir almost always refers to a nuclear family. (Message edited by aonghus on September 01, 2004) |

Sorry: Foinse is wrong, it means source. Bunús is the word I was looking for. Bunús sloinnte na hÉireann. BTW, I am slightly puzzled at the the reference to an Uí Neill sept. The Uí Neill are the descendants of Niall Naoi ghiallach, and are split into numerous septs. |
