"B'fhacthas dó agus an phá a bhí dó anois, agus an t-árdú a bhí dlite dó go gairid, nach mbeadh sé thar bhliain go leith, nó cupla bliain ar a fhad, ag saothrú díol a fhreastail." I looked up "facthas" and found that it's the dependent past autonomous form of "feic". But there is no particle, just the past form of the copula, "Ba". Why doesn't it just say "Chonacthas (the past autonomous) dó...."? Is this another dialectical thing? |

It's just the way they say it in that dialect, I guess... |

An bhféadfá é a mhíniú, a Aonghuis, le do thoil? |

B'fhacthas dó = "it appeared to him" or "he considered". |

Tá fhios agam é sin, a Aonghuis. I was hoping you'd explain why it's like that (as opposed to chonacthas). |

Ah. I don't know. It just is! I don't conciously know the grammar, except what participating here has forced me to (re) learn. I just speak the language! Brón orm as an mí thuiscint. |
