Is barrúil gur chuir tú an cheist orm an lá cheana agus mé leath bealaigh trí cheannach isteach ann i ndiaidh seacht nglún i dtuaisceart Shligigh. Tá mé ar an séú glúin a tháinig ar an saol i Sligeach. Lean roinnt ban sinn ar cleamhnas, gach ré glún nach mór. Tá roinnt col deichniúir agam i dtuaisceart Liatroma as cleamhnas débhealach tuairim 1820.

Ba as deisceart an cho. m'athair mór taobh mo mháthar agus tá cairde go leor agam sa taobh sin chomh maith.

Hehe I assume that was for me :)

I cant get my head around this bit: "agus mé leath bealaigh trí cheannach isteach ann i ndiaidh seacht nglún i dtuaisceart Shligigh. Tá mé ar an séú glúin a tháinig ar an saol i Sligeach. Lean roinnt ban sinn ar cleamhnas, gach ré glún nach mór." Something about seven "nglún" in southern Sligo, that you are the sixth "glúin" to come to live in Sligo. Then there's somehting about impediments to marriage, arranged marriages or something in southern leitrim. I understood the last sentance tho :)

Tuigim. I'm half way through buying into the place (Liatroim), (us) having been seven generations in north Sligo.

Sea. Sixth generation Sligo-born.

Sea. Some of the women-folk followed us in, marrying in almost every second generation. I have some fourth cousins in north Liatroim by way of a sister-swapping marriage in or about 1820. Is é 'Sister-swapping' an bealach is soiléire le cuntas a thabhairt ar an gcineál seo pósadh.

Phós mo shin-seanathair deirfiúr mo shin-seanuncail! Dowries were saved in such instances. The following generation (1856) did the same. My grt.grndfather married a sister of the man that his own sister married, if you can follow that!

Ní thuigeann muintir na hÉireann go dtarlaíodh an cleas sin níos minice ná a mhalairt mar gheall ar chúrsaí cleamhnais agus easpa spré. I mbeagán focal, tá mé muinteartha do roinnt col ochtair (i Sligeach) agus do roinnt col deichniúir (i Liatroim) faoi dhó! Tá an chuid is mó de mhuintir na hÉireann amhlaidh, i ngan a fhios!

--BTW Seosamh, am I right in assuming you are from Leitrim...
Arbh é an sloinne a thug ar an mbarúil sin thú?
