I get confused about Irish words for "think". What is the difference between "ceap", "síl", "cuimhnigh", "meas", "smaoinigh",or can they be used interchangeably?

Not quite!
"cuimhnigh" means I recalled/remembered something.
"meas" conveys the meaning of guessing/measuring
"síl" sometimes implies the thought was/may have been incorrect.
"ceap" can mean creative thought

"smaoinigh" is the most general of them; but there are shades of meaning in all of them depening on context.

I use "ceap" when I'm expressing an opinion or expressing what I believe or think:

Ceapaim gur madra é.
Ceapaim gur dhún sé an doras.
Ceapaim nach rachaidh sé ar ais.

And I use "smaoinigh" when I'm actually physically thinking about something:

Bhí mé ag smaoineamh ar an mbean.
Smaoinigh sé faoin madra.
Smaoineoidh mé ort.

Failte romhat. Tá súil agam nach síleann tú a thuilleadh go bhfuil sé deacair smaoineamh as gaeilge, ná smaointe doimhne a cheapadh! Cuimhnigh i gconaí go bhfuilimid ann le cabhrú leat. Measaim go n-éireoidh go bréa leat.

Go raibh maith agat arís, a Aonghuis. Tá mé ag smaoineamh níos mó as Gaeilge gach uile lá!

Is maith do scéala a Cheltoid.
Tiocfaidh sí níos fusa leat feasta, tá súil agam.
(You're getting near to the summit or to the downhill slope where it may start to become easier.)

Go n-éirí leat.
