I learned my Irish many moons ago, 1940's to be exact. I would love to get a font that has the irish script as it was used then. You know, with all the fadas, sineaus, buailtes etc. Can anyone point me in the right direction.

Go raibh maith agaibh

Proinnsias.

http://www.fainne.org/gaelchlo/ has a range of fonts.

Bunchló arsá is probably best for you, since it automatically uses the long s and r.
Putiing in a séimhiú is tricky, you'll probably need to cut and paste it. I used to have a keybaord driver for Windows 98 which converted an apostrophe to a séimhiú; but I don't think it's available for later windows versions

Ok, I'm a little confused. I understand after following the link to download 'Keymng32' to set up my keyboard for acceptance of commands dealing with dotted consonants and long lower case 'r'and 's'.
But, then how do get to the Bunchló Ársa font? It tells of its attributes and gives examples, but I end up going in circles trying to find where to get it downloaded. Help, please.

GRMARR,
Maidhc

Ok, what'd I miss? I downloaded the zip file and it shows the letters and gives a sample sentence and comes with a seperate file explaining the rights for usage, but doesn't tell you how to get your keyboard to do it.
Or am I just an idiot? - Don't answer that. LOL! :)

Does it work at all or is it just a pretty picture? I mean, I can use my "Word" crayon to write a font that just copies,
cuts and pastes. Anyone? :(

A Mhaidhc, a chara,

I could be wildly off mark here as I haven't downloaded the file you're referring to, but don't you have to install it as a font and then use as any other font???

AAAArrrrgggghh! I tried, after MANY interruptions to get it, and when it came time to drag it into the font file it popped up as an invalid font file - so it won't work.

What version of windows are you using?
It works fine for me on XP, and worked before on other versions.

Try leaving it where it is, but using it as a font; this is an option when installing.

I've got 'Millennium'. I'm not through trying yet, a chara. Like I said, too, there were a LOT of interruptions yesterday.
I'm also no great wizard on this thing. It's like I've got to learn a new trick every time I want to do something. This is another one of those times. ;) LOL
Allll-righty then. (I crack my knuckles, stretch back a bit - is that the coffee I'm smellin'?)One more time, with feeling!

When I use the fadas, I just went into the Regional/Language settings in Control Panel. "When I want to type a fada, I hit Ctrl Alt Apostrophe, then the vowel to be fada'd, and Violá. See, I just used it.

Ah yes, but Maidhc is trying to install a font which uses a dot over the consonant for seimhiú and the "long" s and r, which is a different thing altogether.

You can see some examples at http://www.fainne.org/Gaelchlo

YYYIIIPPPEEEEE!!! I got the font in there. It took me a bit, but I was finally able to at least give it a try in my MSWord.
Is breá mór é! Long 's' and 'r' in the lower case. Very cool!
Go raibh míle míle maith agaibh, a chairde!
Ok, one more thing, if anyone can help. Does anyone know how to create the dotted seimhiunta?
Thanks a million again, guys!
Le Árdmheas Mór,
Maidhc.

I usually just copy and paste them out of the character table.

But there are detailed instuctions, (in English) here:
