"Do Cholm ní cuideáin amháin a bhí an choigríoch: shamhlaíodh sí dá cheadfaí sóntacha mar Bheag-Árainn rosamhach a chaitheadh sondaí uaithi anois is arís i gcumraíocht corrphoncán grianbhealaithe, agus 'bhaitseannaí'óir, oll-'truncannaí' buí diamhra,..." Cad is brí do "corrphoncán","'bhaitseannaí'óir", agus "oll-'truncannaí' buí diamhra"?

Poncán - a Yank (American)
corr phoncán - the odd (or rare) yank

'bhaitseannaí' - a phonetic spelling of "watch", pluralised: gold watches

oll-'truncannaí' buí diamhra - large mysterious yellow trunks

Tá sé sin fíor. Cad is brí do "shamhlaíodh sí dá cheadfaí sóntacha"? Tá mé ag ceapadh go bhfuil dearmad ann. B'fhéidir gur "shamhlaíodh sé dá chéadfaí sóntacha" é?

Sóntacha-gullible, naive. (Tá "Foclóir Gaeilge-Béarla" Dhónallach agam anois!) It's the use of "shamhlaíodh" that is confusing me. "She used to imagine to his naive senses..."? That's why I thought it might be a typo: "samhlaíodh". "She was imagined to his naive senses."

Samhlaíonn sé (go) - it would appear (that)... (Ó Dónaill). "Shamhlaíodh sí dá cheadfaí sóntacha...." - It (the foreign land) used to appear to his naive senses....?

Do dhein, dar ndóigh.
Ach feachaint air anois, cheapfainn gurbh botún cló an "sí", gurbh "í" ba cheart a bheith ann, agus mar sin an brí atá agat leis.

Not to interfere with the conversation, but I want to make sure I understand a concept correctly...

Celtoid's thank you to Aonghus should actually be

Go raibh maith agat, a Aonghuis.

correct?
