In my irish course, it states that the word for rain in irish is'báisteach', but then later it says that the word for rain is'fearthainn'. That confused me a bit...which is it?

Both are right. I guess if the Eskimos can have 40 words for snow the Irish can have two for rain.

Only two? We have more.
Báisteach and Fearthainn are the most commonly used.

"Ceobhrán" might be considered a third, depending what clime you are from. It means a fine, misty drizzle. Hardly a rain worth mentioning by Irish standards, merely "a soft day." One of my favorite Irish words is "aiteall," perhaps because only in Ireland where there be need for such a word. It's a spell of fine weather between the showers, and such a typical occurence in the Irish climate. -- Tomás

Cith is a "shower".

I think think there's a word "dealán" which means a sunny spell between showers but I cannot find it in the dictionary.

Any more?
