How many angels can dance on the head of a pin? We don't know, so much is hidden. But, before you even begin to ask the question you must consider how to phrase the question: What do we mean by can speak? How fluently? ...some phrases or can they listen to a show on Raidio naG. How many can speak and how many DO speak? Is í diabhal an thomhais an Ghaeilge.... |

I agree, the answer depends on the question. How many people can speak English in Helsinki? At least 70%, I'd guess, but that doesn't mean that they do speak it. Still, this question is somewhat easier than counting the angels on the pin. According to the latest census: I. 394.240 people in Dublin claim that they CAN speak Irish. This represents 36,6% of Dublin's population. II. 73.131 in Dublin say they speak Irish daily. This represents 6,8%. Of these, many are school children who use the language in school. |

Dia Duit , im from Dublin myself, and id say not a lot, in my cirlce of friends, from school etc. only about 5 could, there were 5 fluent speakers in my year, and there was 100 of us, so shame on them ha ha but looking at the msg posted above id say only about 20 % can, 36.6% claim they can, but most of them will say they can speak irish but cant really, they can onlt say the sentences like everyone can mar shamplá is mise Eíbhlin Tá mé ina conai í Mbaile Atha Cliath and that to them is being able to speak Irish Le Grá Eíbhlin ;o) |
