Hi Michael,

Some of these links might be helpful. This is a language site rather than a genealogy site, but fáilte romhat (welcome) none the less.

Maith an fear a Choilm. Tá sloinne Gaeilge amháin a chuaigh bealach an gharraí, nó chun aistíl an Bhéarla, a bhfuil trácht agam air do Mhícheál anseo.

Michael, a chara, the Irish surname Ó Mantáin has been transliterated to English
as Mountain in Waterford,
as Manton in Kilkenny-Tipperary & Galway-Roscommon,
as Menton in Leinster & Dublin, Roscommon etc., and
as Minton in Galway. (de Bhulbh, Seán, 2002)

Menton is also 'mentioned' (!) as 'the usual form of Ó Manntáin in Munster; sometimes spelt Mentin and Mentane'. (Mac Lysaght, Ed., 1978)

There are also the Norman 'de la Montagne' and the English toponymic 'Manton' to deal with. (ibid.)

Good luck with it - Go n-éirí sé leat.

Dia duit, a Mhícheál,
The 6th. edition of Edward MacLysacht's "The Surnames of Ireland"-c.1991 gives the same info as shown by Seosamh's listing from MacLysacht also.
Ádh mór ort.
Maidhc.
