Lá originally started as a daily paper but it consisted of four large pages. It was more viable as a weekly.
Now people there are more confident and are planning to relaunch it as a daily. I just ran into someone here in New York who bought a share in the new paper -- The price was about $700.00.
As she pointed out, it wasn't philanthropy. She now is a part owner in the enterprise. As someone who had recently considered Karl Marx to rehabilitated by history, the irony wasn't lost on her at all. She smiled at using capitalism to help build the Irish language. In fact, I think the paper greatly improved after it was bought by a commercial newspaper company some years ago.
The editorials and news analysis are still surprisingly shallow, anti-Western and anti-American. I prefer the merely soft-leftwing Foinse. Their standards are higher -- not to disparage a couple of good columnists who write for La, one of them a Unionist.
