Hey, can someone tell me how to use Fadas in documents, etc? i.e. is there an ALT code or something? Or should I try using an Irish keyboard lay-out?

Séamas

Dia Dhuit, A Shéamus:

If you'll do a search using the search tree to the left, you'll find a whole posting devoted to just this question. In the search window put in "fadas" (use the quote marks) then follow that with a + followed by the word keyboard. It'll turn up about eight discussions. The one you want is the very first one.

It seems there are a couple of ways to get a US keyboard to type fadas. I'm not sure which will work best for you. In fact, I haven't tried them myself so can offer no "critique" of the various techniques. I'm still cutting and pasting from below!!!

Go raibh maith 'ad, A Shéamus.

I'll do that. As a matter of fact, I guess I should have thought of that in the first place!

change your keyboard language to UK English ..then if you hold down Ctrl and Alt ..and - whilst doing this - press the letter, you'll get a fada on that letter.

(of course it has to be a vowel)

It's the handiest way I've found of doing fada's while I'm typing.

For an American keyboard,using "windows",here are the commands I give to get fadas.
First,on your right hand keys,turn your "numbers lock" on. Then you hold "alt"and press the following four digits to get these letters which will appear after the keys are released.
"Alt" + 0193 = Á
0225 = á
0201 = É
0233 = é
0205 = Í
0237 = í
0211 = Ó
0243 = ó
0218 = Ú
0250 = ú

I hope this helps.
Slán,
Maidhc.

Dia Dhuit aShéamus;

I tried the Alt commands Maidhc and it worked. Cro raibh maith agat.
In MS Word there are fadas by clicking Insert/Symbol then Latin-Extended A.

FWIW. My new cell phone has fadas. I just bought a Motorola 720, and it contains fadas for inputting names in my phonebook.

Slan agat
