I am a new, very new, student of Irish (gaelic). I thought I'd start very small with one question: My name is Patricia O'Riordan. What is the Irish spelling of that so I can use it on my letterhead?

I believe you would use the Ní Riordáin as a single female. If you are using it as a married name it would be
Uí Riordáin.

At least, that's the way I understand it as explained in the Teach Yourself Irish text.

thank you, elinor and james, very much for the information about my surname. now, another question: does using the spelling you've suggested change the way my name is pronounced? most people think it's spelled O'Reardan when they hear me pronounce it because that's how my family pronounced it. when i correct them, they are puzzled and no explanation of what i know as dipthongs as used in irish seems to help. no big problem that, but i'm curious if it can and/or should be pronouned differently. sam: i've been to that website at the irish times and found it most helpful in learning about my family history. thanks to you, too.
