I am just beginning my study of Irish having taken the Beginner's class at Áras Mháirtín Uí Chadhain, An Cheathrú Rua, Co. na Gaillimhe this past summer. A friend has asked me to translate a birth announcement for her. I have given it my best attempt, and would appreciate any and all corrections and comments. I have written the request below as she sent it to me, her first language is German. Below it is my attempt at translation. Go raibh maith agat, Nancy I have the great pleasure to announce to you the birth on September 28, of my dear Godson Philipp. He is the firstborn of his proud parents, my sister Gudrun and her husband Ingolf. All the three of them are very well. Is maith liom a bheith le rá agam gur do rugadh Philipp, mac baistí mo chroí, ar an t'ochtú lá is fiche de Meán Fómhair. Is é an chéadghin dá tuismitheoirí, mo deirfiúir Gudrun agus a chéile Ingolf. Tá siad go maith. |

Tá sé de phléisiúr agam cur in iúil duit gur rugadh mo mhac baistí ionúin Philipp, ar an ochtú lá is fiche de Mheán Fómhair. Is é chéadmhac a thuismitheoirí é agus is orthusan, mo dheirfiúir Gudrun agus a céile Ingolf, atá an bród. Tá an triúr acu ag déanamh go maith. This is just one possible version. Hope it helps. |

Tá fáilte romhat. Am ar bith. To clean up a wee bit, níl uaschamóg ag teastáil i ndiaidh "Phillip", áfach, agus tá an tuiseal ginideach de "baisteadh" mícheart againn: . . . mo mhac baiste ionúin Philipp ar an ochtú lá is fiche de Mheán Fómhair. |
