Hopefully you will hear from someone who knows more than I do, but I think this means:

Begin to feel the fear of the hawk when it knows that the man approaches his nest.

I'd venture:

The hawk's fear left him when he saw the man near the nest.


(I found "Duil" a hard nut to crack...)
