I've been told by family members that are into researching geneology that our family came from Ireland. However, most people aren't aware of the name Netterville as an Irish name. Am I just asking the wrong people? I've done searches online and found very little information with some of it pointing to England but, once again, there is very little information on the name. If anyone could offer any insight or even a good online or offline source, it would be much appreciated. Thanks, Kelly |

An Sloinnteoir Gaeilge, a standard book of Irish surnames, has this: Netterfield (Netterville), de Neadraibhíol This looks like an Anglo-Norman name, or at least a name that has been "Normanized". You would pronounce it roughly: duh NA-druh-veel (A as in 'cat'), Compare: Blanchfield (Blanchville), de Bluinsín |

Cool! Thanks for the helpful information. I came across a Netterville Manor (Bed and Breakfast) in Meath in a web search (www.newgrangecastle.com). Imagine that! I've also spoken with an uncle since the original posting who has traced our family back to a John Patrick Netterville arriving in New York from Ireland but, he hasn't been able to get any information about the family Pre-USA. Once again, thanks for the great information. This forum is a wealth of interesting stuff. Kelly |
