  • Prof. Cheryl Baker, Lia Johnson

    Gaeltacht GreenvilleGreenville, SC
    (864) 420-6516gaeltachtgreenville@gmail.com

Gaeltacht Greenville, sponsored by the Irish Cara Club, will be launching its first free Irish language (known to most Americans as "Irish Gaelic") class this Tuesday, July 16, from 6-7 p.m. at the Hughes Main Library with weekly classes to follow at Coffee Underground. The class is intended for first-time beginners and speakers looking to brush up on or practice what they already know with social events and more advanced classes in the months to come.

Teachers Prof. Cheryl Baker, an Easley native, and Lia Johnson from the Co. Waterford Gaeltacht (Irish Gaelic-speaking area) invite anyone interested in joining the class to sign up at linktr.ee/Gaeltachtgreenville or reach out to gaeltachtgreenville@gmail.com to learn a little more about the exciting events the group has to offer. Those who are unable to make the first class are more than welcome to sign up for our next meeting on Thursday, July 25th, at Coffee Underground from 6-7 p.m given there is still space!

Gaeltacht Greenville began as an initative of Prof. Baker and the Irish Cara Club in 2019 to create a local community for Irish-speakers/learners and raise awareness of the indigenous Irish language spoken by thousands in the United States alone. Irish Gaelic or "Gaeilge" remains the primary community tongue in certain regions of Ireland instead of English but is still considered to be "definetly endangered" by UNESCO and at risk of disappearing in the native Gaeltacht within a few generations. On the other hand, the language has experienced a remarkable resurgence worldwide among urban communities, the Irish diaspora, and social gatherings like Gaeltacht Greenville with speakers including Empress Michiko of Japan and actor Art Parkinson (Rickon Stark in Game of Thrones).
