Daltaí na Gaeilge
will offer educational scholarships every year for studies in the Irish Language.
These scholarships will be awarded in the Spring of each year in accordance with
the following guidelines:
NUMBER AND TYPE OF DALTAÍ SCHOLARSHIPS
- One scholarship will be offered to a student
for the purpose of continuing his or her Irish Language studies
at an immersion course in Ireland during the same calendar year. This scholarship
will be in the amount of $500 and it is intended to cover the approximate cost of
airfare to and from Ireland.
- One scholarship will be offered to a teacher
or prospective teacher for the purpose of continuing his or her Irish Language studies
at an immersion course in Ireland during the same calendar year. This scholarship
will be in the amount of $500 and it is intended to cover the approximate cost of
airfare to and from Ireland.
- One scholarship will be offered to a student or teacher
for the purpose of attending the weeklong Irish Immersion Program held every Summer
in upstate New York. This scholarship must be used in the same calendar
year in which it is awarded and it will cover the amount of the fees (room, board
and tuition) charged that year for the summer program.
QUALIFICATIONS
Any person who has attended at least two immersion programs sponsored by Daltaí na Gaeilge
since January of the previous year will be eligible to apply for a Daltaí Scholarship.
Attendance means participating as either a student or a teacher [or both] at these
programs.
CRITERIA FOR SELECTION
Selection Criteria
will be broken into two parts, each of which will count for one half (50%) of the
screening process. The criteria will evaluate:
- The applicant's dedication to Irish Language studies; and
- The applicant's dedication to promoting the work of Daltaí na Gaeilge
.
DEDICATION TO STUDIES AND TO THE WORK OF DALTAÍ NA GAEILGE:
Each application must indicate any facts which demonstrate the applicant's dedication
to Irish Language studies and to the work of Daltaí na Gaeilge
. Appropriate information may include [but is not limited to] such things as: 1)
length of study, 2) frequency of attendance at Irish Language immersion programs,
3) teaching the Irish Language [for how long and how frequently], 4) service to Irish
Language clubs, programs, events or classes, 5) specific contributions to any
of the work of Daltaí na Gaeilge
such as help with organizing programs, teaching, presenting workshops, contributions
to the web page, mailing lists, publicity and recruitment at festivals, fund raising,
composition of a "submission" piece etc.
STUDENT APPLICATIONS
- In addition to seeking to encourage study of the Irish Language, student scholarships
are also intended as a way of developing future teachers and assisting our current
teachers. Each student applicant is invited to include a "submission" on a topic
that would advance teaching the Language. For instance, a new handout, chart or teaching
aid that covers a particular aspect of the Language [grammar, vocabulary, verbs,
prepositional pronouns, etc.] would be appropriate.
Likewise, a student might outline a particular problem in learning the Language from
a student's point of view or a specific class topic which would be especially helpful
or interesting. In other words, the "submission" should assist teachers either by
outlining a teaching method or by clearly identifying a study problem experienced by
students. Submissions should be as specific as possible, but no particular format
need be followed.
TEACHER APPLICATIONS
- In addition to seeking to reward those who have given service as teachers, teacher
scholarships are also intended to encourage the writing of new materials in the Irish
Language. Each teacher applicant is invited to include an original "submission"
written in the Irish Language. The "submission" may consist of an article, short story,
poem or other appropriate piece. No particular format is required. In the alternative,
a teacher's "submission" may consist of a teaching aid or analysis of a teaching
problem or method as outlined above.
DALTAÍ NA GAEILGE
will be entitled to keep all "submissions" and use them as it deems appropriate.
In particular, it is intended that certain of the "submissions" will be posted on
the Daltaí na Gaeilge
web page.
DEADLINES
- All applications must be received or postmarked no later than the first day of
May for the year in question. The names of the scholarship recipients will be announced
every year no later than the last day of May.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Each applicant will be required to specify which immersion program he or she intends
to attend. In addition, all scholarship recipients will be required to present a
report, either written or oral, about the programs they attend. These reports must
be given at a Daltaí na Gaeilge
Immersion Program no later than May of the following year.
SELECTION COMMITTEE
- All Daltaí Scholarships shall be awarded by a majority vote of the members of the
Board of Trustees of Daltaí na Gaeilge, Inc.
No person who has served on the Selection Committee may apply for a Daltaí scholarship
for the following three years. No relative of a serving member of the Selection
Committee is eligible to apply for a Daltaí Scholarship.
Rules as revised, effective 13 November 1999.
